Aims and Objectives
The Waterways Trust works to fulfil the economic, social and environmental potential of the United Kingdom's inland waterway network.
By encouraging people to get involved in our activities, we aim to heighten awareness and enjoyment of the waterways while bringing real and sustainable benefit to local communities in all their diversity.
Education and Learning
The Waterways Trust is the custodian of the inland waterways collection and archive. This national resource for education and research tells the story of the waterways and their influence on the development of the UK over 300 years.
To promote a broader understanding of the value of the waterways to society, we operate and develop our museums and archives for leisure as well as for education and research. This important national resource also provides essential support for the management of waterways throughout the United Kingdom.
Arts, Community and Access
We raise funds for and deliver projects that interpret the waterways through the arts to provide recreation and enjoyment. We encourage involvement in waterway improvements that benefit the community.
Recreation, Health and Activity
We encourage the use of the waterways to provide healthy activity and leisure for a wide range of people and raise funds for this purpose. We work with many partners to encourage tourism and bring people to the waterways, with a wide range of social and economic benefits.
Environment and Conservation
We develop, fund and deliver waterway conservation projects. These include improvements to habitats, biodiversity, historic structures and objects and records held in the inland waterways collection and archive.
All our work is dependent on building and sustaining a vital network of partners. These include individuals, charities, other waterways trusts, societies, navigation owners and managers. Together we are continuing the modern renaissance of the waterways for the benefit of present and future generations.
